WEIGHT WELLNESS:
What Is Overweight and Obesity?
Overweight is having extra body weight from muscle, bone, fat, and/or water. Obesity is having a high amount of extra body fat. Body mass index (BMI) is a useful measure of overweight and obesity. BMI is calculated by dividing your weight
in kilograms with height in meter square. BMI below 18.5 is under weight, 18.5 to 24.9 is normal, 25 to 29.9 is over weight, 30 & above is obese. Talk to your health care provider if you are concerned about your BMI.
Reaching and maintaining a healthy weight or normal BMI is important for overall health and can help you prevent and control many diseases and conditions. If you are overweight or obese, you are at higher risk of developing serious health
problems, including heart disease, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, gallstones, breathing problems, and certain cancers. That is why maintaining a healthy weight is so important: It helps you lower your risk for developing these problems,
helps you feel good about yourself, and gives you more energy to enjoy life.
BMR Concept: Some experts use the terms basal metabolic rate (BMR) and resting metabolic rate (RMR) interchangeably. These two terms are very similar. But there is a slight difference in the definition of BMR and the definition of
RMR that is helpful to understand.
Basal metabolic rate is a measurement of the number of calories needed to perform your body's most basic (basal) functions, like breathing, circulation and cell production. BMR is most accurately measured in a lab setting under very
restrictive conditions.
Resting metabolic rate is a measurement of the number of calories that your body burns at rest. Resting metabolic rate is usually measured in the morning before you eat or exercise and after a full night of restful sleep.
As you can see, the definitions of RMR and BMR are almost identical. Your resting metabolic rate should be an accurate estimate of your basal metabolic rate. Because the terms are similar, some fitness and weight loss experts use both terms
to describe the same thing. But the term "resting metabolic rate" is more common. You can use any online BMR calculator and see how much calories you require daily to maintain basic functions, which will help to reduce weight (extra fat deposition).
What Factors Contribute To a Healthy Weight?
Many factors can contribute to a person’s weight. These factors include environment, family history and genetics, metabolism (the way your body changes food and oxygen into energy), Lifestyle and behaviour or habits.
Energy Balance in the body:
Energy balance is important for maintaining a healthy weight. The amount of energy or calories you get from food and drinks (energy IN) is balanced with the energy your body uses for things like breathing,
digesting, and being physically active, like exercises (energy OUT); The same amount of energy IN and energy OUT over time = weight stays the same (energy balance). More energy IN than OUT over time = weight gain More energy OUT than IN
over time = weight loss. To maintain a healthy weight, your energy IN and OUT don’t have to balance exactly every day. It’s the balance over time that helps you maintain a healthy weight.
You can reach and maintain a healthy weight if you: Follow a healthy diet, and if you are overweight or obese, reduce your daily intake by 500 calories for weight loss. Avoid or reduce carbohydrates, sugary, fatty, deep fried stuff, milk processed dairy products. Avoid binge eating & untimely food intakes.
If you are physically active: doing exercises in any form daily, like 30 minutes brisk walk. Limit the time you spend being physically inactive. Avoid sedentary lifestyle. Take sound sleep at night 6-7 hours at regular time.
